Two other criminals escaped with gunshot wounds following the incident.

Police in Nakuru have shot dead two criminals who are believed to be part of a gang of four men that had been terrorising residents and traders in Nakuru North.

A multi-agency security team ambushed the criminals in their hideout within Umoja Estate prompting a gunfight where two of them died and a loaded LIAI rifle was recovered.

Two other criminals escaped with gunshot wounds following the Saturday incident.

The officers had been tipped by members of the public that the armed gang had been spotted in the area.

Asked to surrender, the criminals opened fire on the officers, resulting in a fierce exchange.

"The pursuit for the two who escaped with gunshot wounds is underway," the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said.

Also recovered at the scene were a panga, hammer, pair of pliers and a dagger.

The bodies were moved to the Nakuru Annex Morgue awaiting identification.

Meanwhile, a Mitsubishi lorry that was stolen a fortnight ago between the Kenol and Makutano areas in Kirinyaga was on Sunday recovered at a garage in Karen while being fitted with fake insurance and registration plates.

Another set of registration plates no. KCT 446R was at the time of recovery being used on the vehicle.

A theft report had been made at Kiamaciri Police Station by the manager of Kanini Haraka Enterprises Limited on April 1. The vehicle's tracker was immediately disabled after the theft.

A 30-year-old suspect is being held over the crime and is set to be arraigned later today.
